Wesley So bests Magnus Carlsen, but trails at Opera Euro Rapid chess tilt

Grandmaster Wesley So scored 3.5 points in the first five rounds including an opening-round triumph over leader Magnus Carlsen in the Opera Euro Rapid of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Sunday, February 7.

The 27-year-old So is currently tied for second with Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi and half a point behind Carlsen, who bounced back from his first-round defeat with four straight wins over Armenian Levon Aronion, Americans Sam Shankland and Leinier Dominguez-Perez, and German Matthias Bluebaum.

After his win over Carlsen, So ran into nemesis Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France and yielded. But he recovered and toppled Bluebaum and Russian Daniil Dubov, then split the point with Aronian.

Interestingly, it was another painful setback by So to Vachier-Lagrave, who eliminated the former in the quarterfinals of the Airthings Masters—the second leg of the Tour—a month ago.

Good thing So found a way to calm himself and willed his way back to contention by scoring 2.5 points in the next three rounds.
