NCCA honors Filipino musical achievements in the past two decades

From cultural workers to remarkable acts, here are the Sudi Awards winners that made the 2000s and 2010s a celebration of Filipino music

Sudi, an Ilokano adjective that means celebrated, famous, and renowned, is the word that best embodies the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ (NCCA) newest award-giving body for music. 

The NCCA Sudi Awards aims to recognize 20 of the most outstanding Filipino’s musical achievement in the past two decades. Together the leaders of the NCCA, the national music awards is headed by its technical working team consisting of National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab, NCCA National Committee on Music head Dr. Felipe de Leon Jr., Organisasyon Ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit and Philpop executive director Dinah Remolacio, Elements Music Camp founder Twinky Lagdameo, Homonym founder and managing director Mike Constantino, and Filipino world music artist Bayang Barrios.

“The award was initiated by the technical working group, chaired by Noel Ferrer, under the recommendation of former NCCA chairman and National Artist for Literature Dr. Virgilio Almario,” the NCCA says. “In the succeeding years, excellent and significant musical contributions shall be recognized annually.”

Chosen by 2020 Sudi Awards jury members Bobby Barreiro, Andre Allan Alvarez, Maria Rachelle Gerodias, Francis Reyes, Lutgardo Labad, Christian Bautista, Dr. Felipe De Leon Jr., Dr. Elena Mirano, Melchor Villena, Dr. Jose Buenconsejo, and chaired by Ryan Cayabyab, here are the honorees of the NCCA’s first music awards,

Winners for the years 2000 to 2009:

  • Prof. Benicio Sokkong
  • Prof. Carmencita Guanzon Arambul
  • 98.7 DZFE-FM “The Master’s Touch”
  • Gary Granada
  • Grace Nono
  • José Iñigo Homer Lacambra Ayala
  • Loboc Children’s Choir
  • Prof. Josefino Toledo
  • Dr. Raul Sunico
  • UP Singing Ambassadors

For the years 2010 to 2020, the winners are:

  • Acapellago
  • Ateneo Chamber Singers
  • Vincent Ferdinand Dancel
  • Gerard Salonga
  • Aristotle Pollisco
  • Jonathan Manalo
  • Noel Cabangon
  • Rak of Aegis
  • Philippine Madrigal Singers
  • The ‘70s Bistro Bar

Meanwhile, eight special citations are given to the following.

  • Akapela Open
  • Elements Music Camp
  • Philpop MusicFest Foundation
  • Pinoy Playlist Music Festival
  • Bayanihan Musikahan
  • Bob Aves
  • Prof. Danongan Sibay Kalanduyan
  • Route 196

The date of the Sudi Awards is yet to be announced. But Filipino music lovers and industry creatives can expect to witness great musical performances from the awarding ceremony to be live streamed this year.
