K-pop star CL honors late mother with new single 'Wish You Were Here'

K-pop star CL, former leader of girl group 2NE1, is paying a tribute to her late mother Hong Yoo-ra by releasing her new single “Wish You Were Here.” 

The song arrived following her mother’s tragic passing due to heart attack on Jan. 23 at age 53 and on CL’s 30th birthday on Feb. 26, an acknowledgement of the gift of life she gave to CL.  

“Every year, our birthdays should be in celebration of the Gift of Life our mothers gave us. This year, I made ‘Wish You Were Here’ for my mom, my family and anyone else who misses a loved one. If you love someone, tell them now,” CL posted on Instagram along with a photo of her and her sister with their mother. 

CL also released a video music for “Wish You Were Here” that depicts her childhood and mother-daughter moments, which were filmed mostly by her mother, and were only released now. 

The music video also includes present-day footage as a nod to CL wishing her mom were here for what she and her sister, Harin, are now doing with their lives.

“Wish You Were Here” tells the heartbreak of losing a loved one and CL reminisces their memories together including their love for well-known singer Stevie Wonder, recalling “the playlist we made/A bit of old school jazz and our favorite Stevie.” 

“Can you still hear my voice now? Are you watching down on me?” CL sings. 

In “Wish You Were Here,” CL sings “Cuz it’s been 6 months since I last saw you but I hope you’re okay / Can’t believe you went from mother to angel in the space of a day / Can't help but wonder / What does your life look like / Without me there?”

In addition, CL created a playlist on her Spotify account called “The Playlist We Made” which includes songs she and her mom listened to while CL was growing up. 

“Wish You Were Here” was produced by DJ Spinz, and written by CL, Boniq, DJ Spinz, MNEK, Rozes and Asia Whiteacre.
