Gorayeb faces tall order in PVL homecoming with revamped PLDT squad
By Carlo Anolin

Veteran volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb is raring to return to the call of duty when he tries to steer the revamped PLDT Home Fibr squad in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL).
Gorayeb, a cancer survivor, expects a tall order entering the PVL in molding the newcomers and veterans of the team, which transfered to the PVL from its stint in the Philippine Superliga (PSL).
"Unang-una siyempre masaya... parang homecoming talaga (First of all, I'm happy... this is like a homecoming for me)," said Gorayeb during Wednesday's episode of The Game on One Sports, Feb. 23, joined by former NCAA MVP Shola Alvarez. "There's no place like home, diyan ako nagsimula. Diyan na rin siguro tayo magtatapos, sa PVL. Sana (There's no place like home, that's where I started. I think this is where it will end too, hopefully in the PVL)."
Gorayeb, who has 14 years of coaching experience in the then-Shakey's V-League, expressed elation over the fact that face-to-face training is set to kick off soon.
But more than that, the multi-titled tactician is glad that volleyball action is back as the sport took a hiatus amid the coronavirus pandemic.
In the Superliga, PLDT won bronze in the 2019 Grand Prix Conference under Gorayeb before settling for fifth on its last stint in the 2019 Invitational.
"Sobrang malaking challenge sa akin 'yung meron mga bagong player, paano mo sila doon ige-gel sa mga lumang player (It's a huge challenge for me on how I would gel the new players with the old ones)," said Gorayeb, hoping that training kick off as early as next week.
"Paano mo sila imo-mold na naman into one, think as one, move as one, work as one. 'Yun 'yung pinakamalaking challenge though meron naman akong ample time to prepare for that. Sana the soonest time possible mapag-gel ko sila (How could I mold them into one, make them think as one, move as one and work as one. That's the biggest challenge for me though I believe I have ample time to prepare for that. Hopefully, I could make it the soonest time possible)."
Gorayeb, who coached San Sebastian, Ateneo, and PLDT in the Sports Vision-organized league, said the Power Hitters are just waiting for the go-signal of the Games and Amusements Board (GAB).
Completing the PLDT cast are last year's holdovers Alvarez, Jorelle Singh, Aiko Urdas, Joyce Sta. Rita, Vira Guillema, Kath Villegas, and Alyssa Eroa, and new key recruits Rhea Dimaculangan, Eli Soyud, Chin Basas, Yeye Gabard, Nieza Viray, Isa Molde and Marist Layug.
Dimaculangan, a veteran setter, was the last member to join the Power Hitters in the PVL.
