Customs seizes illicit cigarettes in Bataan

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has apprehended 20-footer containers with illicit cigarettes and truck loads of possible smuggled tobacco products, the Department of Finance (DOF) said.

Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III said Wednesday, Feb. 24, that the Customs bureau took control of a ship named LTC Yellow River at Orion Dockyard in Orion, Bataan after the vessel was seen “unloading the rice and cigarettes.”

“Upon visual inspection, the vessel positively contains cigarette mastercases,” Dominguez said, citing a report by Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero.

According to Guerrero’s report, “the captain cannot explain the presence of cigarettes in his ship.”

“We already took control of ship and crew and will issue warrant of seizure sir,” the Customs chief told Dominguez.

Guerrero also reported to the DOF chief that they also apprehended three trucks in three different checkpoints in Bataan that contained “possible smuggled cigarettes.”

“Initial information indicated that there are three trucks apprehended from three separate checkpoints at Hermosa, Orion and Limay all positive for cigarettes,” he said in his report submitted to Dominguez.
