WNBL a 'giant step' for PH sports, says No. 1 pick Cainglet

Fille Claudine Cainglet, the first-ever pick in the Women’s National Basketball League Draft, commended the league for its contribution to the Philippine sports as well as creating a platform to showcase the talent of Filipina cagers.

"It's really a big step for us in the women's basketball in the Philippines," Cainglet said over Radyo Pilipinas 2. 

"It's a giant step. The fact na na-establish 'yung league, ibig sabihin maraming magaling and that the women in basketball in the Philippines deserve a spot sa Philippine sports industry (The fact that the league was established means that there are many talented players and that Filipina cagers deserve a spot in the Philippine sports industry)."

It would be recalled that the collegiate basketball player-turned-doctor was performing an operation when the Glutagence Glow Boosters selected her in the draft of the country's first-ever women's professional basketball league.

For the 32-year-old Cainglet, the league and its players may serve as an inspiration for young girls who aspire to become professional ballers as well.

Before pursuing being a doctor as a profession, Cainglet suited up for University of the Philippines from 2006 to 2010.

As far as training is concerned, Cainglet, the sister of former Ateneo volleyball star Fille Cainglet-Cayetano, said the squad is only conducting individual training at home and shooting practice at vacant courts due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The former UP star expects a higher level of competition now that the WNBL is composed of newcomers and veteran players battling in the professional league.

Aside from Cainglet, the Glow Boosters picked prized Gilas recruits in Camille Claro and Khate Castillo for the second and third overall picks, Camille Sambille, April Lualhati, Nic Cancio, Carol Sangalang, Raiza Palmera-Dy, Nicky Garcia, Samantha Tan, Ays Hufanda and Camille Ramos.

Glutagence is coached by Justin Tan, a former member of La Salle Greenhills SBP coaching staff and head coach MPBL's Mindoro Tamaraws last season.

"We are a mixture of an experienced and young player so feeling ko maganda naman yung magiging chemistry namin especially when I met the coaches. 'Yung coach namin medyo new school. Bagong mga basketball thoughts and ideas. Unlike noong na-experience ko siguro noong college, more of innovative si coach (We are a mixture of an experienced and young player so I feel that the chemistry will be good especially when I met the coaches. Our coach has somewhat a new school approach. New ideas and thoughts on basketball. Unlike what I've experienced before in college, our coach is more innovative)," said Cainglet.
