POC eyeing big contingent to Vietnam SEAG

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) seeks to send 560 athletes to the 31^st Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam late this year.

POC President Bambol Tolentino announced this Thursday, adding that it could still be reduced until further evaluation with various national sports associations.

Tolentino said the primary basis of the selection is on athletes who won medals of any color in the 2019 SEAG that the country hosted.

In that edition, the country fielded its biggest delegation ever with 1,115 athletes and harvested 387 medals – 149 gold, 117 silver and 121 bronzes.

“We also looked at events where the potential of winning the gold medal is very high, as justified by an athlete or athletes’ performance in 2019,” Tolentino said.

This year’s SEAG meet will have 520 events in 38 of the 40 sports.

Host Vietnam set a March 21 deadline for entry by number of participating nations. Entry by name will be in August.
