JYP Entertainment has issued an apology for a hanbok-inspired costume worn by K-pop girl group TWICE member Dahyun in a cover music video that was similar to an outfit worn by BLACKPINK’s Jisoo in the “How You Like That” music video.

On Feb. 10, the agency released the music video of TWICE members Dahyun and Chaeyoung’s cover of the song “Switch to Me,” which was originally released by K-pop star Rain and JYP’s Park Jin-young last Dec. 31.

However, the designer of Jisoo’s original costume who saw TWICE’s video posted on social media that it was her custom-made outfit but did not make it.

The designer has made costumes for K-pop groups including BLACKPINK, TWICE, ITZY, ATEEZ, Stray Kids, BTS, EXO and Seventeen.

After the controversy erupted, JYP Entertainment released a statement and apology.

“Regarding the costumes from Dahyun and Chaeyoung’s Melody Project, the hanbok was purchased from a hanbok company and we did not properly recognize the similarities. We are sincerely sorry for this. We deeply apologized to the designer and explained the situation. We will be more careful so this will not happen again in the future,” the agency said.

In addition, the “Switch to Me” music video was edited and the scene where the hanbok imitation costume appeared was deleted. It was re-uploaded on Feb. 11 on TWICE’s YouTube channel and has garnered 1.57 million views as of writing.

The hashtags #FREETWICE and #JYPE_OUT trended on Twitter as fans gave their take on the issue.

Korean netizens also commented on the issue.

“This is the stylist's mistake, why is TWICE getting hate for it,” one commented on one news article about the controversy, according to Netizen Buzz.

Others wrote “BLACKPINK’s stylist must be really mad.. this is so blatant” and “ I thought of BLACKPINK’s outfits as soon as I saw it.”

“No wonder.. I did think of Black Pink the moment I watched the music video. I just assumed the same designer was their coordi,” one commented.

Another said, “Why are the comments being so lax about this?? This is an original design of the designer, you're not allowed to just copy it because that makes it plagiarism and a wrong. Of course an apology is needed in this situation. Yes, we all realize that it's the coordi's mistake and not Twice's. This is not a Twice/Black Pink issue but their coordi's issue.”
