Two 10-year-old girls give birth in NCR and Calabarzon—PSA

With the alarming growth of adolescent pregnancies revealed over the weekend by Popcom, the commission has announced that this issue is of national emergency.

Today, Philippine News Agency shared a report by the Civil Registry Statistics of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) that we have two registered live births from 10-year-old girls from the National Capital Region (NCR) and Region 4-A (Calabarzon).

“Although a declining trend was observed in both age brackets, the case of a 10-year-old getting pregnant has sounded the alarm for all local government units to harmonize their efforts for stronger and better initiatives on adolescent reproductive health,” Commission on Population and Development (Popcom) NCR Director Lydio Español Jr. said in a news release last Tuesday.

Español pointed out that there are health risks involved when it comes to getting pregnant at 10 years old, even to the baby she's carrying. Getting prenatal and other maternal services are also difficult at this time of the pandemic.

PSA statistics also shared these numbers of reported births from adolescent mothers within the age range of 10 to 19 years old in 2019: Quezon City at 4,246, City of Manila at 3,782, Caloocan City at 2,429, Pateros at 95, and San Juan at 100.

Popcom-NCR is working on efforts to reduce teenage pregnancies with The Challenge Initiative (TCI) project, in partnership with Zuellig Family Foundation. Quezon City, Manila, and Makati will join the launch. The commission will also be working with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for the Social Protection Program for Teenage Mothers and their Children.
