Soon to take your breath away: Bicol International Airport nearing completion

The construction of the Bicol International Airport (BIA)--tagged as the "Most Scenic Gateway" of the country--is moving at an exceptionally fast pace.

Currently, the overall progress of construction at the BIA has been pegged at 74.132 percent complete. Actual construction work at the airport only started in December 2016.

But now, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur P. Tugade has ordered the conduct of continuous or 24/7 construction, and to do what is necessary to ensure faster completion of the project.

As of Feb. 3 2021, Package 2A of the BIA development project is 89.784 percent complete.

Construction works in Package 2A cover the airport’s landside facilities, such as the Administration Building, Air Traffic Control Building, Crash Fire Rescue Building, and the Maintenance Building.

On the other hand, Package 2B of the airport project is now 52.699 percent complete. Package 2B covers the construction of the passenger terminal building (PTB), taxiway, runway extension, and other site development works.

Once completed, the BIA, which features the iconic Mayon Volcano as its magnificent backdrop, is expected to serve a total of two million airline passengers every year. The new international airport is also projected to boost air traffic in the region as soon as economic activities are fully revived, most especially tourism and commerce.
