Traffic snarls around the metropolis, chestnuts roasting by supermarket entrances, a profusion of Christmas-themed Zoom celebrations and gatherings—t’s our second Christmas season living under the shadow of COVID. And admittedly (plus, thankfully), there’s a more positive vibe in the cool December evening air this year.
So it’s a mix of some decidedly shaking off the shackles of quarantine fatigue, coupled with some still staying cautious with the Omicron variant lurking in the wings. Our Malls have been sensitive to this phenomenon: happy to welcome the intrepid mall goers, while being there for the more timid and careful. That’s why I loved the video that SM Supermalls posted last week, their #TogetherAtSM: ChristmaSaya sa SM.
It wonderfully captured the duality of what’s going on this Christmas season, and how SM Supermalls is truly here to do it all for you, no matter what attitude you’re taking to this phase of our pandemic-life. The text that appears towards the end of the video says it all—Damdami’y Hindi Nagbabago. I liked how this theme was reinforced throughout the video and the use of split screens.
Whether it was from the safety of home or via safe malling, the images and sequences of the video showed us how SM Supermalls was reminding us that, ultimately, it’s about celebrating Christmas with family and friends, about creating strong memories, and bringing smiles to the faces of everyone who’s part of our lives... even if the face is that of our pet dog. I laughed with how the pet dog transitioned from having an enjoyable time at home, to going crazy at Paw Park.
And when it came to Christmas meals, we were shown how the option of dining at the mall, or at their al fresco locations, were now both realities—as is the option of bringing the food home, or having it delivered. The point is food has always been at the center of Filipinos celebrating, and it shouldn’t be any different this Christmas season.

There’s shopping at the Mall, as all stores are open; but there’s also the convenience and safety of curb side deliveries, as was shown in another sequence. Whether shopping for new sneakers, appliances, Christmas lights, or for whatever, if you aren’t ready to physically head to the malls, then the SM online services will allow our fingers to do the shopping for us. And they’ve made sure all the different SM stores and affiliates are represented on the website and social media platforms.
Oh, and the music of the video—a very popular Pinoy Pop dance song slowed down to resonate, and be both nostalgic and inspirational. Wonderful work done on this video, and it’s been enjoying numerous views—reminding us that SM is here to help ensure that Christmas happiness doesn’t really change.
