Much-awaited Pacquiao-Mayweather rematch set on a basketball court next month

The much-awaited face-off between Philippine boxing icon Senator Manny Pacquiao and nemesis American Floyd Mayweather Jr. may take place next month in the Philippines but not in the boxing arena.

Pacquiao and Mayweather who are among the world’s most respective boxing legends are also basketball aficionados and have agreed to show off hoops talents by forming their respective teams for a charity game.

The two popular boxers have been planning the basketball match which will also see them recruiting top retired National Basketball Association players into their respective teams.

“Sa January sinabi na pupunta si Mayweather sa Pilipinas para makipaglaro ng basketball. May ino-organize kaming basketball game. (Mayweather is expected to visit the Philippines to play basketball. we are organizing a basketbal game,” Pacquiao told reporters during a interview over the weekend.

“Magbuo siya ng team niya at magbuo rin ako ng team na may former NBA player na maglalaro. (We will form our respective teams that will play together with former NBA players),” said the senator who is running for president.

However, he stressed that the event should not be seen as a campaign gimmick to promote his bid for the presidency in 2022.

Pacquiao stressed that their camps have long been discussing the “basketball-for-a cause” match.

He disclosed that all proceeds from the game will all go to charity.

“Iyong ang gagawin namin, kung ano man ang pulitika natin dito, eh sa atin lang iyon. Iba naman ito, puro basketball at charity. (What we will do has nothing to do with our politics. This is different, it involves basketball and charity),” Pacquiao explained.

Asked about the timing of the event which will take place four months before the election, Pacquiao said they have been planning the basketball game for a long time but schedules cannot meet.

“Wala nang ibang time, except sa January. Katatapos lang natin lumaban noong August. (There’s is no other time except in January. We just finished a fight last August),” he pointed out.
