5 people wounded in MSU Marawi City violence, PNP eyes gang war

Gen. Dionardo Carlos, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), ordered on Sunday, Dec. 5, a thorough investigation into a shooting incident inside the Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City that left at least five people injured.

The initial investigation, however, pointed to a gang war as a motive behind the incident that left victims Aripodin Darayno Mamacuna, Macaraya Saripada Armama, Banjo Saripada, and Rakim Saripada injured.

“We are alarmed by this act of violence displayed inside a campus. I have ordered the concerned police unit to resolve this case at the soonest possible time,” said Carlos.

Based on the initial investigation, Mamacuna was walking inside the campus when he noticed that a group of men were following him. He then proceeded to the grandstand to hide but was cornered and later beaten up by the suspects.

The other victims pacified the incident but were shot by the suspects.

The beating and shooting only ended when an off-duty PNP personnel, who was watching the awarding ceremony of a sport event at the grandstand, responded to the incident after hearing the gunshots.

He identified himself as a cop but was shot by one of the suspects. This resulted in an exchange of gun fire wherein one of the suspects was hit. All of the suspects then ran away.

The suspects were later identified as Macaraya Saripada Armama, Banjo Saripada, and Rakim Saripada, all are of legal age and residents of Barangay Rapasun, Marawi City.

Follow-up operations are now being conducted against the suspects.
