San Juan kicks off Christmas festivities, activities

The City of San Juan kicked off its Christmas celebration on Friday, Dec. 3, with a series of events sure to bring back the joy of Christmas amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora together with his family and city government officials led the Christmas tree lighting ceremony held at the city hall grounds. A fireworks display added more color to the celebration.

“Last year, we had a modest celebration and just had our giant Christmas tree lit for the holiday season. This year, we are happy to announce that we are once again bringing back our Christmas Bazaar and this is just the start of what we have in store for our people,” Zamora said.

“Even if we’re still in a pandemic, we’d like to celebrate a merrier Christmas while strictly following health and safety protocols," he added.

The city government also launched its Christmas Bazaar which will last until Jan. 1. It is open daily from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.

The bazaar features different food and beverage stalls as well as clothing and arts and crafts from different small businesses in San Juan City to help them in their economic recovery as most of them have been hit heavily by the pandemic.

On weekends, the city will have performances of singers, magicians, and LED lights and fire dancers to entertain patrons. “Santa Claus” will also be at the venue so children can have their photos taken with him.

Zamora reminded both exhibitors and visitors to practice and follow health and safety protocols especially during the Christmas season.

“I’m sure many people will flock here to buy food and clothing and enjoy the entertainment, but I would like to remind them that we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, so make sure to wear your masks and practice physical distancing,” Zamora said.

Meanwhile, the city also hosts the World AIDS Day Concert and will hold film showings on the next couple of days to help educate people about HIV and AIDS.

Awarding-winning films such as "Kalel, 15" and "Ang Timeline sa Buhay ni B" are the featured films to be shown on December 4 and 5, respectively, at 9 p.m. at the bazaar grounds.
