'Fit to lead': VP Leni goes biking in Iloilo

Vice President Leni Robredo assured the public on Saturday, Dec. 4, that she's fit and healthy to become the country’s next president in 2022.

Robredo, the leader of the opposition, emphasized the importance of having a president who's healthy enough to carry out the tasks at hand.

“Well, ano kasi, may obligasyon tayong manilbihan sa taong-bayan (we have the obligation to serve the people) in the best way we can. Sa akin, mula noong nag-vice president ako, talagang nag-exert ako ng maraming (For me, since I became vice president, I really exert a lot of) effort to make sure that I’m healthy dahil kung nagkakasakit ka (because of you get sick), it takes you away from your work eh,” she told the media in Iloilo City.

The Vice President rode a bicycle at Iloilo Esplanade with her running mate Senator Kiko Pangilinan. Women and children bikers also participated in the event dubbed “Ride for Leni.”

Ride with Leni was organized by the Ilonggo biking community to celebrate Iloilo’s two national gold awards: Most Bicycle-Friendly City 2021 from Mobility Awards, and Best in Bike Lanes 2021 from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Also present during the event were Senator Franklin Drilon; opposition Senate bets Chel Diokno, Sonny Matula, and Alex Lacson; Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, and other local officials.

Robredo said she wants to replicate Iloilo City’s bike-friendly lanes and infrastructures for the entire country.

She shared that she hasn’t had the time to enjoy biking since she lives in a condominium unit in Metro Manila and hasn’t been home in Naga City for a while.

“Ang tagal na noong last bike ko (It has been a long time since I last went biking),” she shared.

“Sana, sana magawa natin ‘yung nagawa ni Iloilo, ng Iloilo (I hope we can do what Iloilo has done, what’s been done in Iloilo) in many other parts of the Philippines,” she added.
