18-year-old student creates Jose Rizal portrait using thread and old electric fan frame
GENERAL MARIANO ALVAREZ, Cavite – An 18-year-old college student created a unique masterpiece featuring Dr. Jose Rizal in commemoration of Rizal Day on Thursday (Dec. 30).
Caster Throi P. Plantilla, a first-year BS Mechanical Engineering student at the Technological University of the Philippines – Manila, made a portrait of the National Hero using thread and an old electric fan frame.

"To pay tribute to his courageous deeds, I made an inspired artwork using my art form called the 'Electric Fan Thread Art,'" Plantilla told the Manila Bulletin about his project that took five hours to complete.
According to Plantilla, string algorithmic art has been popularized in other countries by artists who use high-quality metal frames.
Because metal frames are not readily available locally and can be quite expensive, he used a recycled electric fan frame instead.
"I cut an unused electric fan frame until all the hooks for the thread are in place. By following the sequence from a software, I carefully passed the thread to the hooks of the frame," he said.
Plantilla previously went viral after creating an electric fan thread art that featured Jennie Kim of the South Korean girl group BLACKPINK.
