Team Secret falls short in upset bid vs Gambit Esports in Valorant Champs debut

Team Secret just couldn’t sustain its impressive start as its upset bid against the Berlin Masters champions Gambit Esports fell short, 2-1, in its first match in the group stage of the Valorant Champions 2021 in Berlin, Germany on Thursday, Dec. 2 (Manila Time).

The Filipinos shocked the world after pulling off an impressive 13-6 victory in Game 1 but failed to keep up with Gambit in the next two maps and allowed the Russian squad to score a reverse sweep.

Secret was off to a fiery start in the Icebox as it embarked to an early 5-1 lead and continued to roll in the next few rounds to take an 8-4 advantage at the half.

The Filipinos surrendered the first two games after the switch but TS went full throttle in the next six games highlighted by a Jessie "JessieVash" Cristy Cuyco clutch play on the Sova against two players from Gambit to score TS’ 12th point of the match.

Jayvee "DubsteP" Paguirigan on his Jett led the way for the Filipinos with 20 kills on a 1.5 KDA average as Secret drew the series’ first blood.

TS seemed to have poked the sleeping giant in Gambit as the team that reigned the Berlin Masters showed its true form in second map in Breeze.

The Russian squad executed a perfect 13-0 annihilation of the Filipinos as it took full control of the map all game long. Bogdan "Sheydos" Naumov on the Skye put up 15 kills on 2.0 KDA average to help Gambit tie the series.

That 13-0 drubbing didn’t seem to affect TS as it engaged Gambit in a tight contest in the first half of Bind.

Down by one, TS had a 2 v 1 advantage in the final moments of the final game in the first half but Igor "Redgar" Vlasov on the Astra scored a clutch against TS to turn things around and give Gambit a 7-5 headway at the half.

Secret cut the lead down to one, 7-6 after, Borkum’s clutch play to open the second half scoring but the Gambit responded with its own huge play to rebuild an 8-6 advantage.

Secret looked in disarray from that point as errors piled up, eventually allowing Gambit to take control and conquer the next five maps to close out the series.

Secret battles for its tournament life when it takes on fellow winless team Crazy Racoons from Japan while Gambit hopes to punch the first ticket to the playoffs when it clashes against Team Vikings in the winner’s match, both games on Sunday, Dec. 5.
