Scientists discover that pineapple peels aid in Nile tilapia growth

Pineapple peels no longer need to go to waste as researchers from the RUDN University in Russia discovered that using pineapple peel powder augments the growth of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). 

The researchers found that a supplement made from pineapple peels boosted the fish’s immune response, increasing its resilience to infections.

Morteza Yousefi, an associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Medicine at RUDN University, said that pineapple peel is rich in fiber, protein, and pectin. He added that other substances in the peels can promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the fish’s body. 

The cheap food supplement not only performs well with Nile tilapia but also has the potential to alleviate food poverty by increasing productivity in fish farms.
