ILOILO CITY — The damage caused by Typhoon Odette in Western Visayas region has ballooned to over Php 2.26 billion.
The Php 2.26 billion figure was released by the Western Visayas Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (Western Visayas RDRRMC) via the Office of Civil Defense (OCD-6) in a December 28 report.

The biggest damage was incurred by the region’s fishery industry with a combined losses of Php 1.19 billion. That included the Php 899.49 million losses of fishery products and Php 297.49 million in fishing boats and other equipment or facilities.
The region’s rice industry suffered the second biggest losses by Odette at a little over Php 1 billion. Citing the data of the Department of Agriculture (DA-6), more than 43,160 farmers in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental provinces lost 68,523 metric tons of rice to Odette.
Odette also damaged Php 9.8-million of public infrastructure. Citing the data of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-6), two major roads were damaged in Aklan province while a bridge and a road were also damaged in Antique province.
Odette killed 33 people in Western Visayas while 19 others are still missing. It also affected 1.85 million people in the region.
President Duterte has placed the entire region under a state of calamity to be able to release funding for those affected.
