DND buys 2 more warships from South Korea for P28B

The Department of National Defense (DND) bought an additional two brand new corvettes for the Philippine Navy (PN) which will be manufactured from South Korea.

DND Secretary Delfin Lorenzana signed the P28-billion agreement with South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for the Philippine Navy Corvette Lot 1 Acquisition Project in a virtual ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 28.

Lorenzana said the new corvettes will be capable of conducting anti-ship, anti-submarine, and anti-warfare operations.

“I share the jubilation of our valiant sailors and marines, the entire Armed Forces of the Philippines, as well as the entire nation for this acquisition of two more capital assets for our Philippine Navy,” Lorenzana said.

“I am very pleased that we were able to meet our target to have the contract for the Philippine Navy Corvette Lot 1 Acquisition Project signed before this year ends. Despite delays due to the pandemic, we are finally signing the contract, the last phase of the procurement process,” he added.

The HHI also built the Navy’s Jose Rizal-class missile-capable frigates – the BRP Jose Rizal (FF150) and the BRP Antonio Luna (FF151). These ships were instrumental in the delivery of relief supplies to the victims of the recent typhoon Odette in Visayas and Mindanao, as well as in patrol operations in the West Philippine Sea.

“Acquiring these corvettes from the Hyundai Heavy Industries, also where we bought the two frigates, will ensure commonality and interoperability with our existing assets. They will serve as backstop to the two Jose Rizal-class frigates. With a common shipbuilder for all our naval platforms, we expect ease of maintenance and repairs,” Lorenzana said.

Lorenzana was joined by fellow signatory, HHI representative Ka Sam Hyun, during the ceremony.

Also with them were Minister Kang Eun-ho, head of South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration; HHI President and Chief Executive Officer Chung Ki-Sun; Gen. Andres Centino, AFP Chief of Staff; and Vice Admiral Adeluis Bordado, PN Flag Officer in Command.
