Changing weight key to Lim's silver medal finish in Asian Champs

Moving weight classes paved the way for karateka Jamie Lim to capture the silver medal in the recently concluded 2021 Asian Karate Federation (AKF) Karate Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Lim, 24, yielded to 20-year-old Sarah Alameri of the United Arab Emirates, 2-1, in their -61kg women's senior kumite final.

But a silver medal finish is an achievement enough for Lim considering she entered the tournament as a rookie.

"I'm super grateful because I know it's really hard to get a medal sa (in) Asia Championships and it's very rare than you actually have medals and it's my first time tapos (then) I got to the finals so I'm super grateful the training pulled off," said Lim in a recent interview of The Game.

Perhaps the key to her victory is the move made by her and the coaching staff to change weight classes from -68kg.

She actually competed in the 2021 Karate Olympic Qualification Tournament under the -68kg category held in Paris, France last June.

Lim felt happy with the results since the qualifiers and thought she already found the right weight class for her.

On top of that, Lim, a gold medalist in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, said the biggest takeaway she gained from recent tournaments is that hard work really pays off well.

"Kahit first time, kaya. It's possible really even though it's been a while na wala tayong medalist sa Asian Champs or usually kapag World, you usually lose in the first rounds kasi walang experience. No, that's not true (Even if you're a first-timer, you can actually do it and it's possible. It's been a while since we had a medalist in the Asian Champs and usually in the Worlds, you lose in the first rounds because you lack experience. No, that's not true)," said Lim.

"Even though it's a long shot, I believe na kaya as long as you really train hard and if you believe in yourself and just go there sa mat and believe na kaya mong manalo (It's a long shot but just believe and train hard. If you believe yourself and just go there on the mat and believe that you can actually win)."

Mae Soriano was the last Filipinas karateka to end up with a podium finish after settling for bronze medal in the -55kg kumite of the 2009 Asian Karate Championships in Foshan, China.
