Briones underscores importance of 'effective communications' in promoting DepEd's advocacies

Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones underscored the importance of effective communications in order to highlight and further promote the advocacies of the Department of Education (DepEd).

“I believe in effective communications,” Briones said.

“, our efforts will be lost, our efforts will remain unnoticed, and we will be objects of criticism if we don’t go out of our way, to tell the truth, to share with our various publics what we are actually doing,” she added.

To recognize its field information officers and their offices for their outstanding government communication work, DepEd also conducted last week the first-ever Information Leaders Awards (ILAW 2021).

Initiated by DepEd’s Public Affairs Service (PAS) and overseen by esteemed boards of judges, the ILAW 2021 highlighted the initiatives of Regional Information Officers (RIOs) and Division Information Officer (DIO) in supporting the advocacies of the department.

“It is but right that even as we continue our communication battles, we also take the time to celebrate our victories,” PAS Director June Arvin Gudoy said.

“We have to recognize you, our information frontliners for keeping the faith, because in the darkest of nights when everything we hold dear and everything we worked hard for are challenged day in and day out, you became the source of hope, the guide for our fellow workers and for all our partners,” he added.

ILAW 2021 awardees

DepEd-CALABARZON won big as National Champions in Information Dissemination (Print) and Public Assistance Service categories, 1st runner up in Information Dissemination (Broadcast) category and 2nd runner-up in DepEd Manual of Style (DMOS) Implementer in the Regional Level.

“To all my fellow information officers, RIOs and DIOs, let this ILAW inspire and motivate us to be bearers of the torch that illuminates the path leading to a well-informed, more critical, and participative community. We are all called to be bearers of this torch,” said CALABARZON RIO Ariel Azuelo.

At the Division level, SDOs in CALABARZON garnered the most awards among the national finalists.

SDO Rizal was cited as the Most Outstanding Public Assistance Service category and 1st Runner-up in Information Dissemination (Print) and DMOS Implementer categories. Meanwhile, SDO Imus City grabbed the top spot in the Information Dissemination (Print) category.

Meanwhile, Region XI (Davao Region) and SDO Mati City won the Most Outstanding in Social Media Management while Region X (Northern Mindanao) and SDO Iloilo received the Most Outstanding DMOS Implementer in the regional and division level, respectively.

The Most Outstanding in Information Dissemination (Broadcast) was awarded to Region III (Central Luzon) and SDO Davao Occidental.

SDO Davao del Norte also won the Best “Isang Pangarap” Music Video award for their local interpretation of the song originally performed by Manila Concert Choir (MCC).

DepEd-PAS Media Relations Unit head Regobel Tumaneng, who passed away on Dec. 17, was also honored during the ILAW 2021.

Meanwhile, Briones congratulated PAS for initiating the awards night. “Thank you very much for bringing the attention of the Department to the importance of communication,” she added.
