DAVAO CITY — The number of reported cases of acute gastroenteritis in Siargao is now at 373, with a total of 13 confirmed deaths as of Wednesday, Dec. 29.
In its Situational Report No. 22, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) of Surigao del Norte said 373 cases of acute gastroenteritis were recorded in three municipalities, including General Luna, Dapa, and Pilar.
The number includes both admitted patients and outpatients. The patients experience diarrhea and vomiting.
A total of 174 cases were recorded in General Luna, including 166 patients in the Rural Health Unit (RHU) and eight in GL Municipal Hall. The municipality also recorded five deaths due to acute gastroenteritis.
In Dapa, 179 cases with seven deaths were recorded in Siargao Island Medical Center (SIMC). In the Dapa evacuation center, 10 cases and one death were reported.
Meanwhile, in Pilar Polyclinic, 10 cases and zero deaths have been reported.
General Luna also reported one suspected case of leptospirosis.
The report noted that "major water sources incurred damages on their main pipelines and water system resulting to lack of water supply."
"Some municipalities utilized deep well, springs, and available reservoirs," it added.
It added that Surigao City's water supply is being restored gradually.
The province's water supply system reported a total of P51,710,000 partial cost of damage. Among those damaged were the water facilities in Mainit, Tubod, San Francisco, Claver, Tagana-an, and Gigaquit.
The report also noted that among the immediate needs of Siargao District Hospital are additional generator sets, repair of the roof or tarpaulins, rice, water purification tablets, tetanus toxoid, and face masks.
The report also listed that the province needs support for camp coordination, management, and psychosocial interventions.
The province also needs sea transport assets for Siargao Island and islets.
