Kai Sotto's NBL team 36ers enter COVID protocols

Kai Sotto and the rest of the Adelaide 36ers will be under the COVID-19 health and safety protocol after a test of one of the players returned a positive result recently.

The development prompted Australia's National Basketball League to suspend the 36ers’ game against Perth Wildcats originally slated on Tuesday, against South-East Melbourne Phoenix on Sunday and also the match between Perth and Brisbane Bullets on Saturday.

NBL said in a statement that the league is complying to the health and safety protocols set by the Australian government amidst the threat of the new COVID-19 Omicron variant.

“The health and safety of the players, coaches, clubs, staff and fans is the League’s number one priority when considering these matters,” said NBL in a statement.

“The NBL will continue to follow the advice of governments and health authorities. Regular testing of all players and staff will continue, while further testing will be carried out on individuals impacted or those deemed close contacts,” it added.

Sotto has only played once for the 36ers after missing the first four games of the squad due to knee soreness.

Adelaide, which has a 2-3 win-loss record, wanted to make sure that the health of its players and staff are in utmost priority.

"It's extremely disappointing to have the games postponed, but we must follow the advice and guidelines of the state government meaning those deemed close-contacts will have to isolate,” said the 36ers executive.

“The health of our players, coaches, staff, corporate partners, members and fans, is our number one priority. The focus now is to support our players and coaches during the isolation period and ensure their well being,” he added.
