ICYDK: 'The Nutcracker' ballet is streaming online for free

CCP’s Philippine Ballet Theater brings the holiday classic to the virtual world

Traditions during the holiday span beyond the dishes that are served on the table or the sprucing of one’s home. For some, the season calls for people to gather and savor art. There’s the yearly Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), light shows at theme parks, and also a trip to see theatrical performances. While many theaters are yet to welcome audiences back, that doesn’t mean that its spectacle cannot be felt this time.

Bringing a timeless holiday tale, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and its resident dance company gift Filipinos the magic of ballet as they put Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” ballet online for free through their official YouTube channel. Adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” the two-act ballet was filmed at the main theater of CCP in 2019.

“Philippine Ballet Theater proudly invites you to its delightful holiday classic, ‘The Nutcracker,’” the company said. “Generations of audiences have enjoyed this charming tale of holiday adventure that follows a little girl’s journey into a fantasy world of fairies, princess, toy soldiers, and more!
