Robredo, opposition leaders bat for upgrade on security guards' benefits, working conditions
Opposition leaders, who are running in the 2022 elections, will push for the review and update of Republic Act 5487 or the law regulating the organization and operation of private detective, watchmen or security guards agencies to improve the sector of security guards in the country if they win the elections next year.

In a virtual townhall meeting with security guards on Monday, Dec. 27, Vice President Leni Robredo, vice presidential aspirant Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan, and Senatorial candidate Antonio Trillanes IV expressed similar opinions about the need to amend the law that was enacted in 1969.
Trillanes, who is running under Robredo's ticket, said RA 5487 needs an update to ensure the security of tenure of security guards who are called the "force multiplier" of the country's military and police force.
During the townhall meeting, most of the security guard organization leaders raised concern over their security in their employment.
"Ang nagiging problema natin sa security of tenure ay karamihan sa security agencies na nag-eemploy ay iniikutan nila yung batas at wala silang accountability (The problem with security of tenure is that many of the security agencies are taking advantage of the law and they have no accountability)," Trillanes said.
Pangilinan also echoed this saying that "revisiting RA 5487 and amending it is timely."
Robredo stressed her intention to push for a standard compensation of security personnel nationwide, including the improvement of their benefits, working conditions, and security of tenure.
"Marami tayong kasong hinawakan para sa mga security guards. Ang isang realization talaga ang baba ng compensation kaya kailangan na nating i-upgrade (I have handled many cases of security guards. One of my realizations is that their compensation needs an upgrade)," Robredo said.
"So, yung sa'kin talaga ang dapat unahin natin, kailangan natin ma-standardize yung compensation package para sa mga security guards kasi isa kayo sa pinakamahirap yung trabaho. Pinakamahirap yung trabaho, yung threat sa buhay ay nandiyan (So, for me, we need to prioritize the standardize compensation package for security guards because they have the hardest job, the threat in their life is there)," the vice president added.
The aspiring president underscored that in order to realize these aspirations for the sector of security personnel, the country needs a leadership that will push for a law that will upgrade their quality of life.
