The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 11 fireworks-related injuries less than a week before the New Year.
“As of 6 a.m. of Dec. 26, 2021, a total of 11 fireworks-related injuries reported. These were the same compared to 2020 (11 cases) and 77 percent lower than the five year average (48 cases) during the same time period,” the DOH said. The agency started its monitoring on Dec. 22.
“All cases were injuries due to fireworks. There was no fireworks ingestion, stray bullet injury, or death reported,” it added.
The DOH said that five cases sustained blast and burn injuries that require amputation, five others also had the same injuries but without amputation, while one case had an eye injury.
“Six cases occurred at home, while five cases occurred in the street,” the DOH said.
The types of firecrackers that caused the injuries were boga (three cases), piccolo (three cases), 5-star (one case), benggala (one case), triangle (one case), whistle bomb (one case), and an "unlabeled firecrcaker" (one case).
Of the 11 cases, three were reported from Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), two each from Cagayan Valley, Western Visayas, and Central Visayas; as well as one each from Ilocos Region and Bicol.
