Phivolcs records lone volcanic quake in Taal over past 24 hours
Only one volcanic earthquake was recorded in Taal Volcano over the past 24-hour monitoring period, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Thursday, Dec. 23.

In its bulletin issued as of 8. a.m., Phivolcs said the lone quake had a duration of 90 minutes. It likewise said that the Taal Volcano Network recorded a low-level background tremor that persisted since July 7, 2021.
“Activity at the main crater was dominated by upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in its lake which generated plumes 3,000 meters tall that drifted west and southwest,” said Phivolcs in its latest bulletin.
The agency added that the sulfur dioxide emission of the volcano averaged 12,060 on Dec. 22 alone.
With these observations, Phivolcs reiterated that Alert Level 2 remained hoisted in the volcano. Under this level, gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal expulsions of volcanic gas can occur and threaten areas around the Taal Volcano Island (TVI).
“Phivolcs strongly recommends that entry into TVI and Taal’s Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) must strictly be prohibited, especially the vicinities of the main crater and the Daang Kastila Fissure,” it added.
