Fauci warns 'raging' Omicron to strain US hospitals

LONDON, United Kingdom – Top US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci has warned of mounting "stress" on the country's hospital system as the Omicron variant starts "raging" through America and the world, the Financial Times (FT) reported Monday.

"Our hospitals, if things look like they're looking now, in the next week or two, are going to be very stressed with people," Fauci said in a recent interview with ABC, cited by the FT.

The big concern is that this new surge could overwhelm the U.S. medical system if accompanied by a rising hospitalization rate, particularly among Americans who are either unvaccinated or did not receive a booster shot, the FT report added.

Omicron has become the dominant COVID-19 variant in the United States as more people are traveling and gathering for holidays.

The variant is spreading rapidly and has been found in at least 48 U.S. states since the first case in the country was detected in California on Dec. 1.
