Telco services still down in some 'Odette'-hit areas -- DICT

Telecommunications services are still down in some areas affected by Typhoon "Odette," the Department of Information and Communications (DICT) reported Tuesday, Dec. 21.

"Meron tayong ilang probinsya na malakas ang tama nung bagyo, Siargao, Surigao, Dinagat. Pinuntahan po namin mismo nung Linggo (We have some provinces that were hit hard by typhoon, Siargao, Surigao, Dinagat. We went there on Sunday)," DICT Secretary Manny Caintic said during the Laging Handa briefing.

"Ang mga lugar na ito ay wala pa talagang communication lines doon dahil may ilang tore na nawalan ng connection (These areas don't really have communication lines yet because there are some towers that have lost their connection)," Caintic added.

He said the DICT is helping telcos transport personnel and equipment to fix downed communication lines to restore their services.

"Inaayos namin ngayon ang kanilang communications line for emergency purposes sa tulong ng VSATs , ang emergency communication equipment, mga SAT phone (We are now repairing their communications line for emergency purposes with the help of VSATs, emergency communication equipment, and SAT phones)," Caintic noted.

DICT is also looking to set up free Wi-Fi sites in affected areas using VSATs, "tawag (call) centers," and long-range radios.

Caintic said they are trying to restore downed communication lines "this month."

"Ang una nating inaayos muna yung power. Ma-clear muna ang mga natumbang mga poste ng power, kasi hangga't hindi natin yan maayos hindi natin sila makakuha ng kuryente. So siguro ngayong linggo namin yan aayusin (We'll fix the power first. We'll clear the fallen power poles first, because if we don't fix that we won't be able to restore electricity. So maybe this week, we'll fix it)."
