The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Monday, Dec. 20, that typhoon “Odette” initially destroyed a total of P343,454,774 in infrastructure and agriculture across Visayas and Midanao.

The storm destroyed various government facilities, flood control projects, roads, bridges and other infrastructures which amounted to P225,170,000 as well as various agricultural products worth P118,284,774.

At least 54,783 houses were either totally or partially destroyed, 41 road sections and four bridge sections collapsed, and four airports and `118 seaports were damaged while 5,391.77 hectares of crops, and 15 livestock and poultries were completely wiped out in the affected regions.

These include Mimaropa (Region 4B), Western Visayas (Region 6), Central Visayas (Region 7), Eastern Visayas (Region 8), Northern Mindanao (Region 10), Davao (Region 11), Caraga (Region 13), and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Out of the 227 cities and municipalities that encountered power interruption, only 21 areas have restored its electricity. Meanwhile, communication lines were already restored in 106 areas out of the total 136 areas that encountered signal interruption.

The reported death toll has also increased to 58: four were already confirmed while 54 others were still undergoing validation. Counterparts from the Philippine National Police (PNP) placed the partial and unofficial death count at 169.

“We are still assessing the damage but it is huge per initial report: entire community leveled to the ground, no electricity, water, and food,” said NDRRMC Chairman and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.

NDDRMC spokesperson Mark Timbal said Odette was the most destructive storm to hit the country this year since Super Typhoon “Yolanda” in 2013.

“Siguro sa taon po na ito, ito ang pinakamalupit na bagyo na ating dinanas (Probably this year, this has been the most destructive typhoon that we encountered),” he told reporters in a press briefing.

Relief operations in areas that bore the brunt of the storm continued on Monday, according to Lorenzana.

“I have directed the Armed Forces of the Philippines to deploy all available assets – ships, boats, aircraft, and trucks – to bring relief goods to stricken areas,” he said.

The NDRRMC said that a total of P14 million worth of assistance has already been provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to the affected population.

It has a standby resource of P944 million including 374,000 food packs and non-food items that are being prepared for deployment.
