Minor killed, another critically wounded in Rio Hondo explosion

A minor was killed while another one was critically injured during an explosion in Barangay Rio Hondo, Zamboanga City Monday afternoon, December 20.

Initial reports showed that three minors were walking along a protected area in Sitio Aplaya along the coastline of Barangay Rio Hondo when the group found an explosive.

The minors reportedly took a hammer and pounded on the object, which suddenly ignited and exploded.

Zamboanga City Police Office OIC, P/Col Felix Martinez said one of the two, identified as 12-year-old Ericson Bantugan, was immediately killed.

Another minor, identified as 14-year-old Julban Cdungog was critically wounded and brought to the hospital by responding paramedics.

Martinez said the place is classified as a protected area under the Philippine Navy but residents of an adjoining community are said to visit the area.
