Comelec hopes the nearly 66 million registered voters will vote in May 2022 polls
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has expressed hope that the nearly 66 million registered voters will vote in the May 2022 polls.

"We are very happy that we have this high numbers. We hope that the interest of the public will be sustained until Election Day," Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said in a virtual press briefing Monday, Dec. 20.
"Now that they have registered, we hope that they will sustain their interest, their intention to participate, and, on Election Day, they actually do participate," he added.
"If they do participate and if they have a good turnout, then, the 2022 elections will have historic levels of participation," said Jimenez.
Data from the Comelec showed that there are a total of 65,745,529 registered voters for the May 2022 polls which is higher than the more than 61 million registered voters in the May 2019 polls.
Jimenez said they welcome the increase.
"We haven't seen this kind of increase...this sort of thing is sort of historic in terms of the number of people that actually registered," he said.
"It is gratifying to see that the public is so mobilized and is so intent in exercising their right to vote, especially after news came out that the people wouldn't vote," added Jimenez.
