Robredo supporters spread 'hope'; tap Ilocos Sur inmates to make pink parol

Christmas is in the air at the Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail, where inmates are busy making Christmas lanterns as commissioned by presidential aspirant Vice President Leni Robredo’s supporters.

An Ilocos Sur-based group supporting Robredo’s 2022 presidential run has tapped the services of inmates of the provincial jail for the production of pink lanterns or “parol”.

Pink is the campaign color of Robredo, who believes it is “the color of hope and love.” Her supporters are called “kakampinks”, a combination of words kakampi (ally) and pink.

In a Facebook post, the Ilocos Sur for Leni group said the idea to make pink parols came from a doctor who is an avid supporter of Robredo.

Another Robredo supporter made the recommendation that the parols be manufactured by inmates of the Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail, who are known for their parol-making skills.

This a way to celebrate Christmas with a touch of pink and to provide income for the detainees.

“It is also our way to provide them with a source of income,” a member of the Ilocos Sur for Leni said, adding that the prices of parols depend on the size and design.

Each parol reportedly costs around P70 to P350. There were 300 parols initially made by the inmates as of posting time.

The group’s Pink Parol Project (PPP) encourages to be the light in the community they’re in.

"The group said that light not only gives hope but also enlightenment to voters on who we should vote for in the upcoming 2022 elections," the supporter said.
