Robredo has base of rock solid volunteers for 2022 polls --- Trillanes

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV believes that the opposition, led by presidential aspirant Vice President Leni Robredo, doesn’t share voter market with perceived anti-administration bets such as Manila Mayor Isko Moreno.

The Magdalo leader, who served for two terms in the Senate and is now gunning for a seat again, was asked about the alliance of the political families of Estradas, Marcoses, and Arroyos as well as any possibility that the opposition can unite.

Trillanes dismissed the claim that the opposition isn’t united.

“Ang sa nakikita namin kasi, sa pananaw namin, united ang oposisyon. Iyong mga sinasabi ninyo naman kasing ibang kandidato (What we’re seeing, and our opinion is, the opposition is united. Those other candidates you are saying), it’s either independent sila or leaning administration,” Trillanes, who is running for senator under Robredo’s ticket, said during an online interview on Wednesday night.

“Kung may hinahati sila, doon din sa administration. Iyon yung nangyayari doon (If they are dividing anything, it’s the administration. That’s what’s happening there),” he added.

Trillanes noted how Moreno is now wooing President Duterte after his close aide and friend, Senator Bong Go, withdrew from the presidential race.

“Kasi ramdam niya ang kanyang base ay maka-Duterte. Hindi iyan (Because he knows that his base is pro-Duterte. That’s not) shared market with the opposition. That’s what we believe,” he said, emphasizing that Go’s withdrawal isn’t final until it’s made official with the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

As of posting time, the senator has yet to file his official withdrawal papers.

“Alam niyo ‘yung sinasabing pagsasanib pwersa nila Arroyo, nila Estrada, nila Marcos pati nila Duterte, ay pabor ‘yan sa oposisyon dahil liliwanag sa mga kababayan natin na ‘yang mga iniluwa na ng lipunan ‘yun yung nagsasama-sama (You know, what they’re saying about Arroyo, Estrada, Marcos, and Duterte joining forces is favorable to the opposition because it will be clearer to our fellowmen that those who they already rejected before have joined forces),” Trillanes said.

“The moral question would be resolved right ayaw at kapag lumabas ‘yan sa kampanya makikita iyon kung sino ang nasa tama at sa mali (and when that comes out during the campaign, we will see who is at the right and wrong). It’s just a matter of delivering that message sa ating mga kababayan (to our fellowmen),” the former senator added.

Trillanes revealed that some administration personalities have jumped ship to Moreno, but he also noted that if true, Duterte cannot hide that the Manila mayor is his administration’s “secret candidate.”

“Kung (If) openly and eventually ay maglilipatan doon sila at ieendorso ni Duterte yon, kumbaga magiging evident ang kanilang leanings lalo na pagka mag-i-istart na ang campaign period mismo (they will transfer there and Duterte will endorse them, their leanings will become evident especially when the campaign period starts) They cannot be silent ‘yung (with the) support sa mga ganyang bagay (for these things),” he said.

But for Trillanes, it is also not practical for Duterte and his allies to endorse former Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has been leading all presidential surveys.

Having said this, he believes it is still premature to make assumptions this early so the former senator said to just wait for the next survey results, which will be released by January or February in time for the start of the official campaign period.

Trillanes, a staunch Duterte critic, is confident of the on-the-ground support he saw from Robredo’s supporters.

“While the numbers sa (in the) survey, malaki ang lamang ni Bongbong (Bongbong is ahead, but the volunteers), pero ‘yung volunteers, ‘yung (the) passion and energy ng mga (of the) volunteers. Hindi mo ‘yan makikita sa grupo nila Bongbong (You will not see that in Bongbong’s group),” he said.

The volunteers are not funded by the opposition, the senatorial aspirant insisted.

“Kaya iyon ‘yung parang kikilabutan ka (You will get goosebumps), they’re very passionate,” Trillanes said, noting that volunteers are able to persuade and convert voters for Robredo “by the day.”

He believes that such passion will not go unrewarded, claiming that Robredo’s and Marcos’ numbers will “narrow” by February and will be “competitive” by mid-March.
