MRT sweeps Basilan, keeps Champions League campaign alive

The MRT-Negros Occidental swept the Basilan Steel Spikers, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20, to keep their Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) Champions League campaign alive for the battle for fifth at the Aquamarine Recreational Center in Lipa City, Batangas Thursday, Dec. 2

John Lloyd Pedroso put the finishing touches for MRT as he scored the last points both in the second and third sets against Basilan.

But it was Christian Marcelino who led MRT with 15 points, Jet Nonoy and Jian Matthew Salarzon chipped in six points apiece, and Leo Ordiales had five points.

Already in match point in the final canto, 24-20, Pedroso attacked the net and hammed a through-the-block kill for the win as Negros set up another showdown against the Sabong International Spikers on Friday, Dec. 3, for fifth place.

Also leading 21-18 in the second set, MRT unloaded a commanding 4-0 run capped by a Pedroso hit to the back row to take the set away.

Trailing by four points with MRT at set point, 24-20, Basilan also had its chances in the first set but a costly service error paved the way for Negros' momentum heading into the second frame.

Esmail Kasim paced Basilan with 11 points as the Steel Spikers finished at seventh place.
