Sputnik COVID-19 vaccine effective vs Omicron variant --developers

The Sputnik coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine from Russia can provide protection against the Omicron variant, the jab makers said.
"A preliminary laboratory study conducted by the Gamaleya Center has demonstrated that the Sputnik V vaccine and the one-shot Sputnik Light booster are effective against Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of COVID, providing for better protection when compared to other vaccines," the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) said in a statement.
The Sputnik vaccine was developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute in Russia.
The RDIF said that the Sputnik V vaccine "has demonstrated three to seven times less of a reduction in virus neutralizing activity against Omicron as compared to data from other vaccine producers."
Meanwhile, the single shot Sputnik Light is also effective as a booster dose, the RDIF said.
"Sputnik Light booster is recommended to strengthen efficacy of vaccines against Omicron. Boosting by Sputnik Light as well as heterologous boosting can strengthen and lengthen the quickly waning efficacy of many vaccines in light of combined Delta and Omicron challenge," it said.
In the Philippines, both the Sputnik V and Sputnik Light vaccines were granted authorization for emergency use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
