DSWD: Evacuees in 8 regions hit by ‘Odette’ rise to over 279K; relief operations ongoing


The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said Sunday, Dec. 19, over 279,600 individuals or more 74,600 families were already staying in evacuation centers following the onslaught of Typhoon Odette (international name: “Rai”).

The DSWD’s Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) reported that as of 6 a.m., Dec. 19, 279,623 individuals or 74,680 families were taking temporary shelter in 2,060 evacuation centers.

The affected regions were Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan), Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao, and Caraga.

Based on the DROMIC report, 28,982 individuals or 7,427 families opted to stay with their relatives and friends.

Odette has so far affected 202,650 families or 780,800 individuals from 2,322 barangays

Meanwhile, the DSWD reported 160 damaged houses, 125 of which were partially damaged ,and 35 were totally damaged.

The DSWD, local government units (LGUs) and non-government organizations (NGOs) have provided more than P3.57 million in relief assistance to the affected areas.

The DROMIC said considering that most areas affected by Odette were experiencing power outages and have limited internet access, the gathering data on affected population was likewise affected.

“Ongoing assessment and validation are continuously being conducted,” it assured the public.

DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao said relief operations are ongoing.
