Clutch LA Tenorio powers Ginebra past Phoenix in OT

LA Tenorio knocked down a pair of clutch three-pointers in regulation and overtime as Barangay Ginebra San Miguel slipped past Phoenix Super LPG, 125-121, Sunday, Dec. 19 to remain unbeaten in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Tenorio’s three with 1.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter tied the score at 114-all before another rainbow shot in the dying moments of the extension sealed the final count and a 3-0 record for the Gin Kings in front of a roaring crowd of 3,454.

“What a hard-fought game that was. Incredibly hard-fought,” Ginebra coach Tim Cone said.

Import Justin Brownlee had another huge game with 31 points, nine rebounds and eight assists while Christian Standhardinger scored 30 points, the highest since joining Ginebra, while adding nine rebounds.

Arvin Tolentino was also a key factor in the victory on his way to 20 points as the Gin Kings now shift their focus on the Magnolia Pambansang Manok Hotshots in a Christmas Day extravaganza.

Paul Harris, who faced the team he played for just one game in the 2016 Governors’ Cup due to an injured finger before being replaced by Brownlee, had 26 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Rookie guard Aljun Melecio also delivered with 15 points, three assists and two steals as the Fuel Masters looked like they were heading for victory.

His layup after a turnover by Tenorio made it 112-107 for Phoenix with 42 seconds remaining.

Brownlee’s shot trimmed the gap to three, then Harris lost the ball on the backcourt and Tolentino made a layup to pull within one, 112-111. Ginebra fouled Melecio, who split the two freebies for a three-point game while Harris also missed one of two after Brownlee turned it over on the ensuing play for 114-111.
That led to Tenorio’s three which sent the fans into a delirium. Phoenix tried to win by lobbing it to Matthew Wright underneath the basket, but he was too deep to have a clear chance of scoring and made a quick pass to Nick Demusis, who ran out of time to hit a shot.

Overtime saw Wright giving Phoenix its final lead at 121-120 before Standhardinger, a 43-percent freethrow shooter early in the tournament, make both attempts from the stripe to put Ginebra in front.
Melecio couldn’t hit a three and Tenorio answered with a shot from the right side of the arc that bounced in with nine seconds to go to seal it for the Gin Kings.
