The Philippine Azkals, already eliminated from semifinal contention, look to wrap up their AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 campaign with a victory on Saturday, Dec. 18 against Myanmar at the Bishan Stadium in Singapore.
With the semis no longer in reach, the Azkals are hoping to go out with a bang and secure the full three points against the Burmese side in the match at 5:30 p.m.
A 2-1 loss to Thailand three days earlier ended the Philippines’ bid for a fourth semis appearance in the history of Southeast Asia’s biggest football competition.
The defeat handed the semifinal slots to Thailand and Singapore, which will simultaneously dispute the top spot in Group A at the National Stadium.
Both the Philippines and Myanmar share identical three points which they got from victories over lowly Myanmar.
The Azkals will go into their final group stage match with team captain Stephan Schrock, who went back to Germany to tend to his pregnant wife.
Coach Stewart Hall suggested that he will use the opportunity to give more playing time to his young players, who may need the exposure in preparation for future competitions.
It will be the first meeting between the two countries since Sept. 2014 when Myanmar stunned the Philippines to claim the Peace Cup in extra time at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Since 2000, the Philippines has won twice, drew thrice and lost four times to Myanmar.
