Joed Serrano quits Senate race, shocked over 'required' P800 million campaign budget

Actor-producer Joed Serrano is no longer running for senator in the May 2022 national elections.

Serrano formally withdrew his certificate of candidacy (COC) for senator at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Intramuros, Manila last Dec. 10.

When Serrano filed his COC last October, he made it known that his advocacy was to fight for equal rights for members of the LGBT community.

He also wanted to push for lower electricity rates and water bills as well as the standardization of rural and urban minimum wage.

But on Dec. 16, Serrano revealed that he is no longer joining the upcoming national elections.

In an official statement, Serrano said that he was surprised he was required to come up with P800 million campaign budget so that he could join the senatorial race. His full statement:

"Ako po si Joed Serrano, tumakbo sa Senado para sa 2022 election ay personal na inurong ang aking kandidatura sa pagka-Senador.

"Sa kabila ng aking marubdob at malinis na intensyon na ipaglaban ang pantay na karapatan ng LGBTQ (tulad ng equality sa trabaho, parusa sa mga nambu-bully sa sinumang miyembro ng LGBTQ community, same sex marriage pagbonbitohan ng LGBTQ kung pabor sila o hindi, batas na magbibigay ng proteksyon sa LGBTQ couples na matagal nang nagsasama, Home For The Aged Gays), na mapababa ang singil ng ilaw at tubig na isa-isa nadadagdag sa mabigat na pasanin sa ating lahat at maging pantay ang suweldo ng taga-Maynila at sa probinsya para wag nang umalis sa kinagisnan nilang lugar ang ating mga kababayan sa karatig probinsya, napagdesisyunan ko po na wag nang ituloy ang aking pagtakbo.

"Tumakbo ako bilang independent sa kagustuhan na walang paboran na kahit na anong partido pero sa huli ay isa pala ito sa requirement na hihingin.

"Alam ko na marami ang kumuwestiyon, nagtaka at maaaring ang iba nga ay nagtawa pa sa aking desisyon na tumakbo sa kabila ng binubutas sa akin na walang akong natapos o anumang eksperyensiya.

"Ang kaya ko lang ipagmalaki ay siguraduhin ay ang taos puso kong intensyon na makatulong at makapaglingkod sa ating mga kababayan.

"Ika nga, 'timing is everything.'

"Sa tamang panahon, alam ko na maaaring pasukin ko rin ang mundo ng pulitika.

"Di man ngayon, pero maaring bukas makalawa o sa panahong kawayan uli ako ng mas malakas ng tawag na serbisyo totoo at paglilingkod."
