DepEd: 10.7 million students in over 26K schools affected by typhoon 'Odette'

More than 10 million students in 11 regions nationwide are affected by typhoon “Odette” (international name: “Rai”), the Department of Education (DepEd) said.

Based on its partial report as of Friday, Dec. 17, DepEd said that 10,727,585 learners in 26,566 schools are currently affected by “Odette.”

DepEd said that affected areas are those that were issued a tropical cyclone warning signal or localized class suspension.

Affected schools, on the other hand, are those that were used as Evacuation Centers, or were affected by secondary hazards such as flooding, landslide, or storm surge, was in an isolated area, or was reported to have casualties.

Meanwhile, DepEd said that classes in 23,298 schools in nine regions have also been suspended.

DepEd said that there are 671 schools that are currently being used as evacuation centers (ECs). Of the 3,917 classrooms in the eight regions affected, DepEd said that 3,910 are being used as temporary shelters to the affected families.

Based on the partial report, DepEd said that one school in CARAGA is affected by flooding due to “Odette.”

DepEd said it continues to monitor the affected schools through its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS).

Moving forward, DepEd said that its DRRMS will submit agency reports to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Operation Center and will continue to monitor other possible effects of “Odette.”

DepEd said that it will also instruct the School DRRM Coordinators to submit damages reports; and “provide fund support for response interventions to affected areas, if necessary.”
