LEMERY, Batangas —The long-serving mayor of this town has succumbed to a lingering illness.
Incumbent mayor Eulalio M. Alilio died of liver cancer at 10:38 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14, at St. Lukes Medical Center, his counsel, Atty. Nathaniel Cabrera, confirmed.. He was 58.
A former president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) – Batangas Chapter, and a municipal mayor of Lemery for about a decade, Mayor Larry recently withdrew his candidacy for another term as mayor and was substituted in the race by his son Ian.
Last December 12, Mayor Larry surprised his constituents when he went live through his official Facebook page and from his hospital bed, gave his Christmas message.
In his video message, Mayor Larry was optimistic that he would recover from the lingering illness he is battling with.
"Pasensya na po kung di nyo ako makaulayaw sa mga Christmas Party at ang aking anak na si Ian lang ang makakaulayaw nyo, dahilan ah... talagang tayo po ay nakikipaglaban sa karamdaman na pinipilit kong paglabanan at alam kong kaya ko po ito," said the late Mayor.
Alilio also had a battle with COVID-19 sometime in June but was able to recover from it.
