Advincula presides over first 'Simbang Gabi' Mass as Manila prelate

Cardinal Jose Advincula presided over his first "Simbang Gabi" Mass as Manila archbishop at the Manila Cathedral on Thursday, Dec. 16.

Pope Francis named Advincula as Manila archbishop on March 25, 2021 and was formally installed to his new post on June 24.

Father Reginald Malicdem, rector of the Manila Cathedral, said it has been their tradition that the first of the nine-day Simbang Gabi is presided by the Manila prelate.

He said the Manila prelate will again preside a Mass at the cathedral on Dec. 24 at 8 p.m.

After the Mass, mass-goers were treated with rice porridge.

The nine-day traditional Simbang Gabi kicks off the Christmas season in the Philippines, usually held at 4 a.m.

In some areas, they also have an anticipated Mass on the eve of Dec. 15.
