In his speech with his supporters in an open auditorium in San Joaquin, Iloilo, on Tuesday, Dec. 14, Domagoso noted that all those who had occupied the top post in the land, except for former presidents Ramon Magsaysay and Diosdado Macapagal, were all born out of wealthy families.

Domagoso then recalled his life as a scavenger in the slums of Tondo, Manila, where he had to forage for food at the city dump.

He said his father did not earn enough as a longshoreman at the Manila ports, while his mother worked as a laundry woman to help provide for their family.

“My parents were poor, but hardworking and honest,” he said.

“Hindi kailangan magnakaw ang tatay para maging presidente ang anak (A father does not need to steal for his son to become president),” he added.

Domagoso’s political career started in 1998 where he was elected as a city councilor of Manila. After serving three terms, he was elected vice mayor in 2007.

In 2016, he decided to run for the Senate but lost. He was then appointed by President Duterte as
the chairman of the North Luzon Railways Corporation.

In 2019, Domagoso he was elected as Manila mayor.
