PH weightlifters fall short anew in World Championships

A podium finish remained to be elusive for Filipino weightlifters in the 2021 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan over the week.

Tokyo Olympian Elreen Ann Ando, who was two places away from a medal finish, showed a promising performance but fell short in the 59kg division.

Ando lifted a total of 214 kg with 116kg coming from clean and jerk and 98kg from snatch.

John Fabuar Ceniza, though making a new personal best, finished eighth in the men's 91kg division.

He set his personal mark in his group with a 150kg lift in the clean and jerk and a 115kg on snatch for a total of 265.

Ceniza, a 2019 Southeast Asian Games silver medalist, however, still fell short after 19-year-old South Korean Shin Rok made heads turn with a total lift of 288 kg.

Shin had 132 from snatch and 156 in the clean and jerk for a total of 288 kg en route to a gold medal haul.

Dave Lloyd Pacaldo saw himself at the bottom half of the 67kg division after tallying a total of 278kg -- 155kg from clean and jerk and 123 from snatch.

The same goes for Margaret Colonia in the women's 64kg, who registered 105kg in the clean and jerk and 82kg in snatch for an overall 187kg lift.

The chances for a podium finish are still hanging tight as reigning Asian Weightlifting champion Vanessa Sarno and 2019 SEA Games gold medalist Kristel Macrohon will be next in line in the women's 71kg.

In the remaining men's play, John Dexter Tabique will be competing in the 96kg division.
