Poll watchdog to Comelec: Dismiss petition seeking to postpone 2022 elections

Poll watchdog Kontra Daya urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to “dismiss” the petition filed by a group which seeks to postpone the conduct of the 2022 general elections.
“Kontra Daya calls on the Commission on Elections to immediately dismiss the petition filed by the Coalition for Life and Democracy (NCLD) December 10 which calls for the suspension of the May 2022 polls,” it said in a statement.
It was reported that the Coalition for Life and Democracy is seeking to postpone the elections to 2025 because of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
The poll watchdog said that the “petition is patently unconstitutional” and “it violates the people's right to vote.”
“While there is a need to observe proper health protocols at this time, we cannot deprive the people’s right to elect the next President and other officials five months from now. If other countries and territories have protected and upheld the right of suffrage, why can't it be done here?,” the Kontra Daya said.
“Groups like NCLD should refrain from making unconstitutional proposals that would violate the people's fundamental rights just to extend the terms of elected officials, especially Duterte,” it added.
