LPA off Mindanao may intensify into tropical depression within 24 hours -- PAGASA

The low pressure area (LPA) spotted outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) will likely develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Sunday morning, Dec. 12.
The LPA was estimated at 2,140 kilometers east of Mindanao at around 3 a.m., said PAGASA weather specialist Ezra Bulquerin.
He said the LPA may enter the PAR as a tropical cyclone.
Once inside the PAR by Tuesday, Dec. 14, it will be named "Odette," he added.
Based on the latest forecast, PAGASA said the potential cyclone will likely make landfall over Eastern Visayas or Caraga in the next few days.
The LPA is still too far to affect any part of the country but Bulquerin advised those in areas that will likely be affected by the weather disturbance to prepare as early as now.
As of Sunday morning, the shear line, also known as the tail-end of frontal system, and northeast monsoon, locally called "amihan," remain the dominant weather systems in the country.
In the next 24 hours, cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms may prevail over Calabarzon, Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Marinduque, and Romblon.
Those in areas affected by the shear line were advised to take precautions against possible flooding or landslides, especially during moderate to heavy rains
Cloudy skies with light rains may also prevail over Cagayan Valley, Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mt. Province, and Aurora due to the northeast monsoon, PAGASA said.
Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, and the rest of Cordillera Administrative Region and Central Luzon may have partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated light monsoon rains.
Meanwhile, the rest of the country may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
PAGASA warned the public that the occurrence of severe thunderstorms may sometimes trigger flash floods or landslides.
