The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it will coordinate with YouTube to verify the official accounts of election candidates in the said popular video sharing platform.
"We will be working with YouTube to add a verified badge for official candidates that submit their official YouTube channel to Comelec," Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez posted on his official Twitter account.
Jimenez said it is one way of eliminating false information during the election season.
"Having a verified account improves accountability. Know however, that even verified accounts can - and do - sometimes spread misleading or even false information," he said.
"Even verified accounts sometimes traffic in fake news. But at least there is accountability for the information a verified account propagates," he added.
Based on Comelec Resolution No. 10730, "each registered political party/coalitions and candidate shall register with the Education and Information Department of the Comelec, the website name and web address of all platform verified official accounts, websites, blogs and/or other social media pages of such political party or candidate."
"Information contained in online campaign propaganda shall be truthful and not misleading, nor shall it tend to unjustifiably cast doubt on the integrity of the electoral process," the Comelec stated.
