The DOST-II through the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) in Batanes launched the project in the island province’s coastal municipality of Uyugan on Nov. 25.

"Salt production has become an indispensable activity in the local area. With that, the project aims to improve the traditional salt production process of the people in Uyugan through the use of Salt Crystallization Beds,” DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said during his weekly report on Friday, Dec. 10.

He said the beds are stationed beside the Community Fish Landing Center in Uyugan Beach.

It was the DOST-Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) that developed the technology on salt evaporation setup and salt iodization. The salt technology was introduced to the local entrepreneurs on Nov. 4.

The DOST chief said the proposed salt production facility to be constructed in the province was showcased by DOST II through a virtual tour.

The facility will be set up with the assistance of DOST II, ITDI, and the local government unit (LGU).
